An estimated 83,000 South Koreans were taken to North Korea during the Korean War.
Most of them were captured while fishing near the DMZ, but some were abducted by North Korean agents in South Korea.
One of the most famous cases of abduction was that of actress Choe Eun-hui and her husband, film director Shin Sang-ok, who were kidnapped by North Korean intelligence in Hong Kong in 1978.

North Korean troops pushed the United Nations Forces into a small defensive perimeter at the tip of the Korean peninsula before U.N. troops, largely from the U.S. and Japan and commanded by General Douglas MacArthur, landed at Inchon and launched a counterattack.
One mission covered North Korean Army V Corps units in a 60 square-mile area north of Wonju and was made in conjunction with the dissemination of anti-morale leaflets 8011.The second mission covered three areas northeast of Andong with instructions concerning a safe route to be used in surrendering.
The leaflet was prepared on 18 February 1953 for North Korean civilians and military by the 8239th Army Unit of the 1st Radio Broadcasting and Leaflet Group.
