The North Norfolk Railway -- also known as the "Poppy Line" -- is a heritage railway in Norfolk, England running between the coastal town of Sheringham and Holt which is further inland.
The NNR operates both steam- and diesel-hauled services, and organizes a programme of seasonal special events.
In May 1973, the railway was the scene of filming of an episode of the popular TV programme Dad's Army.

Based at Sheringham the North Norfolk Railway runs for 5 miles along part of the former MandGN branch line (which originally ran) from Melton Constable to Cromer (Beach).
Today the North Norfolk Railway runs passenger trains from Sheringham to Holt among what was considered to be the prettiest part of the MandGN.

It was one of the earliest preserved railways, and was the first to be granted a Light Railway Order, which allowed it to carry the public.
County School station, north of North Elmham has been sympathetically restored to LNER war-time condition, and is a delightful place to stop for a weekend coffee break during the summer months.
There are no steam locomotives based on the railway, although the 1500 from the North Norfolk is due to visit the line in 2005.

British Railways obtained a Light Railway Order on behalf of the North Norfolk Railway in 1973, with the Order being transferred to the NNR upon purchase of the line from BR in 1976.
During these years, many items collected by the NNR and Society were refurbished and put to use again as part of the working collection - being used for the purpose that they were intended and visible to all the visitors to the railway.
As may be appreciated, with the North Norfolk Railway having taken over the mantle of running trains on the remnants of the MandGN line over 30 years ago, much of the paperwork from the early NNR days has now also become part of the collection.

The exclusively diesel-powered Mid Norfolk Railway is reported to be negotiating to secure the loan of B1 4-6-0 61306 Mayflower, currently at the Nene Valley Railway.
After the Council had consulted interested parties, the NNR was authorised to resume work in mid March, and the railway now aims to complete the clearance by the end of April.
Norfolk By Rail reports that London Underground 1959-stock aluminium-bodied coaches number 1307 and 2306 were at Easco’s scrapyard at Lenwade, presumably awaiting disposal.

North Norfolk District Council and Norfolk County Council have set up a working party to consider the various options outlined by Arup.
After the railway closed in 1959 it was used as a Norfolk County Council depot.
The NNR plans to dismantle the station building (still with its original fireplaces, cupboards and desks), the porters’ office and and some platform edging and re-erect them at Holt.

In Autumn 1995, the locomotive was loaned to the North Norfolk Railway, where it returned for much of 1996.
Now the North Norfolk Railway have agreed to fund its ten year boiler overhaul in exchange for the use of the locomotive for five years from the date of its return to steam.

Wissington was given to the railway in a barely steamworthy condition, and due to funds not being available the engine was left and the condition deteriorated.
Whatever could be done on the North Norfolk Railway without detracting from other projects was done, and in early 2000, Wissington was moved to the workshop in South Norfolk for restoration.
By 1970 Wissington was out of use, roads having replaced the railway, but it was steamed once in that year so that recordings could be made of it.

The N7 is on long term loan to the North Norfolk Railway from the East Anglian Railway museum at Chappel.
Built by the London and North Eastern Railway in 1924, it was originally numbered 999E.
It moved to the East Anglian Railway Museum in 1973, but work wasn't to started on restoring the N7 to steam until 1981.

I have been looking forward to the National Railway Museum's sole surviving V2, 60800 Green Arrow coming to the NNR, every since I first knew it would be spending its winter holidays "down by the sea".
Green Arrow is, without doubt, one of the most famous locos to have visit the NNR, and the fact that it is an LNER loco, made it all the more special for me. I arrived at midday, Green Arrow had been running light engine from Sheringham to Holt, slotting in between the Santa Specials.
The other Gala debut belonged to the railway's Class 101, which was paired with Class 03 D2063 on some trains.

This is a joint project between the Society and the Railway, led by the Society.
The structural work on the building is now complete, the glazing is all but complete and all that remains is the installation of the signalling apparatus along with the frame, together with the internal redecoration.
The Norfolk County Council have donated the MandGN Thursford Goods shed to the railway on condition we dismantle it and take it away from its current site.
