COUNTY OF ESSEX - LoveToKnow Article on COUNTY OF ESSEX   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
In the north, the chalk, which underlies the Tertiary strata over the whole county, appears at the surface and forms the downs about Saffron Walden, Birdbrook and Great Yeldham; it is brought up again by a small disturbance at Grays Thurrock where it is quarried on a large scale for lime, cement and whiting.
With the exception of chalk for lime (mainly obtained at Ballingdon in the north and Grays in the south), septaria for making cement, and clay for bricks, the underground riches of the county are meagre.
The archdeaconries are first mentioned in 1108; that of Essex extended over the south of the county and in 1291 included eight deaneries; the north of the county was divided between the archdeaconries of Middlesex and Colchester, comprising three and six deaneries respectively.

Although the written history of Upminster in the Anglo-saxon period is almost non-existent (the nearest charter concerns North Ockendon), this is the era in which the parish, and St.Laurence's church, were established, and something like the mediaeval manors first took their shape.
Notice also where St.Laurence's is situated: this is not the typical Essex pattern of a parish church right next door to a manor house, but rather a church on the village green, from which the roads radiated (now obliterated by the crossroads).
