  Pacific Ocean - MSN Encarta
It is sometimes divided into two nominal sections: the part north of the equator is called the North Pacific; the part south of the equator, the South Pacific.
The Pacific Ocean is bounded on the east by the North and South American continents; on the north by the Bering Strait; on the west by Asia, the Malay Archipelago, and Australia; and on the south by Antarctica.
In the southeast it is arbitrarily divided from the Atlantic Ocean by the Drake Passage along 68° west longitude; in the southwest, its separation from the Indian Ocean is not officially designated.

North Pacific Gyre - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The North Pacific Gyre is located between the equator and 50º N latitude.
It comprises the clockwise circular pattern of the prevailing ocean currents: the North Pacific Current to the north, the California Current to the east, the North Equatorial Current to the south, and the Kuroshio Current to the west.
The centre of the North Pacific Gyre is relatively stationary (the area it occupies is often referred to as the horse latitudes) and the circular rotation around it draws waste material in.

 Pacific Ocean
The Pacific Ocean borders Asia and Oceania to the west, North and South America to the east, and Antarctica to the south.
Some of the major marginal seas of the Pacific are the Bering Sea, the Sea of Okhotsk, the Sea of Japan, the East China Sea, the South China Sea, the Coral Sea, the Tasman Sea, the Ross Sea, and the Gulf of California.
The Pacific was given its name because of the tranquillity of its waters, although it is occasionally swept by typhoons, and a number of strong currents circulate beneath the surface.

Volcanic Ash–Danger to Aircraft in the North Pacific
Along North Pacific air routes, some of the busiest in the world, at least 15 aircraft (including KLM Flight 867) have been damaged since 1980 by flying through volcanic ash clouds.
In 1988, in part to address the hazard posed by airborne volcanic ash in the North Pacific, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the University of Alaska Fairbanks Geophysical Institute and the Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys, established the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) with offices in Anchorage and Fairbanks.

 Pacific Ocean - Weather Patterns
A broad pattern of water temperatures in the North Pacific Ocean that shifts on a time scale of about 20 years appears to have an important influence on weather over North America, according to a report in the Friday, Oct. 28, issue of Science magazine.
Using both measurements of the Pacific Ocean and atmosphere taken over the past 60 years and computer models of climate, the researchers have shown that an air-sea climate signal accounts for roughly one-third of the forces that govern the variability of weather over North America.
The result is a pattern over North America of warmer winter temperatures in the northwestern two-thirds of the continent and colder winter temperatures in the southeastern third.

 The Pacific Decadal Oscillation
The pattern of North Pacific sea surface temperature (SST) variations noted to capture the oceanic part of the PDO is shown in Figure 1, while the pattern of sea level pressures (SLPs) noted to capture the atmospheric part are shown in Figure 2.
The SST pattern highlights the strong tendency for temperatures in the central North Pacific to be anomalously cool when SSTs along the coast of North America are unusually warm, and vice-versa (Graham 1994, Miller et al 1995, Zhang et al 1997, Mantua et al 1997).
The North American climate anomalies associated with PDO warm and cool extremes are broadly similar to those connected with El Niño and La Niña (Latif and Barnett 1995, Latif and Barnett 1996, Zhang et al.

Further information on the North Pacific right whale tagging project, including photographs and a map of locations of the tagged whales will be posted on the National Marine Mammal Laboratory's website.

The Pacific/ North American teleconnection pattern (PNA) is one of the most prominent modes of low-frequency variability in the Northern Hemisphere extratropics.
The negative phase is associated with a westward retraction of that jet stream toward eastern Asia, blocking activity over the high latitudes of the North pacific, and a strong split-flow configuration over the central North Pacific.
The positive phase of the PNA pattern tends to be associated with Pacific warm episodes (El Niño), and the negative phase tends to be associated with Pacific cold episodes (La Niña).

But in the other ocean basins (the Northwest Pacific, where more hurricanes occur than elsewhere, the eastern North Pacific, the North and South Indian Oceans and the Southwest Pacific) there had not been a statistical increase in number of storms over the same period.
But the surprising result was that the intensity of hurricanes increased in all ocean basins, with categories 4 and 5 nearly doubling in occurrence between the 1970s and the 1990s.
This implies that at some point within the next decade, there is the risk that the intensity of North Atlantic hurricanes could increase rapidly to the global average (with possibly a concurrent decrease in another ocean basin).

In the left image, the North Pacific Ocean was subject to unusually low sea level pressure (blue) in the Bering Sea and anomalously high sea level pressure north of Hawaii (yellow/red).
These changes to the North Pacific Ocean climate system are different from those that dominated for the past 50-80 years, which has led scientists to conclude that there is more than one key to the climate of that region than previously thought.
These conditions differ from those of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), thought to be the primary key that causes the climate of the North Pacific to change.
