North Petherton is a small town in Somerset, England, situated on the edge of the eastern foothills of the Quantocks, and close to the edge of the Somerset Levels.
North Petherton is situated on one of the historic communication routes through Somerset, and a turnpike through the town was opened between Bridgwater and Taunton in the 1730s.
North Petherton was the first town in England (and one of the only ones) to be lit by acetylene gas lighting, supplied by the North Petherton Rosco Acetylene Company (dating from at least 1898), operating from a plant in Mill Lane which has since been demolished to form a carpark for the local doctor's surgery.

Geoffrey Chaucer (~1343-1400), author of "The Canterbury Tales" was appointed Deputy Forester of the royal forest of North Petherton towards the end of his life.
Believed to have been owned by Alfred the Great it is thought to have been the handle for a pointer that would have fit into the hole at its base and been used while reading a book.

Travelling north through Petherton, on the east side of the road just south of the first red house, the Hellyer chopping mill stood until about 1920.

(Footnote 63) North of the town the boundaries either curve to suggest earlier watercourses or interlock in such a way as to imply that the Parrett may have had several channels and that intercommoning resulted on ground permanently recovered from the tidal marsh.
The Bridgwater and Taunton canal, which from 1827 provided an alternative to the Tone and Parrett navigation, was extended from the terminating lock and basin at Huntworth in North Petherton parish by a loop west of Bridgwater which led to a large dock north of the town linked to the river by a tidal basin.
The north gate, also mentioned in 1299, (Footnote 76) was rebuilt in 1646-7 but by the 1720s it was in bad repair and was taken down to improve the road in 1798.

My recent info is that William CHEDZOY was bn in North Petherton circa 1822 and that his son Charles CHEDZEY (my gtgndfather) moved to the north of England circa 1885 to work in the iron mines.
I have gone back as far as William Pocock, born 1838 in North Petherton, but so far have no details on his birth registration or parents names etc.He married an Eliza Napper whose father was called Samuel, but I can get no further back.

North Petherton is an excellent location for the commuter, as Junction 24 of the M5 motorway within a one mile drive.
To the rear of the property the garden is believed to extend 45' in length and is fully enclosed with lawn, flowerbeds, two sheds, sunken fishpond and gate to pathway allowing access around to the front.
From Junction 24 of the M5 motorway, follow the signs into the village of North Petherton passing the Walnut Tree Hotel on the right hand side.
