The only imperfect component of our time in New Zealand was the weather -- our visit coincided with their late Autumn which meant consistently cold, rainy days (though we did eek out some sunny days on the South Island).
While we were on the North Island we heard weather reports that the South Island was experiencing horrendous snow and hail storms, closing many of the roads in the mountains.
Sadly, the history of the Maori people with the white settlers in New Zealand is remarkably similar to the history of the Native American Indians and the white settlers in America.

Before the river was tamed by dams, power stations and flood barriers in the 20th C., it fully justified its name with its waterfalls, whirlpools, rapids, marshy areas and floods.
At Mercer, north of Huntly, the Waikato abruptly turns west and flows into the Tasman Sea in a wide estuary, over fl ferruginous sand.

Steff and Barb drove us well out of New Plymouth (we think they wanted to make sure we were leaving), a sheep farmer stopped along a gravel road to offer to carry our panniers to our destination (he did) and the following day a woman drove Sheila's bags 95 kilometres to our next stop.
*Kiwi Paradox: New Zealanders always enjoy chatting, taking their time, but once they are behind a steering wheel, they put on tight underwear and drive like mad men.

The farmer, Kim Riley, was swept off her feet by the current as she tried to turn a group of cows away from the rising river at her farm in Woodville, 80 miles north of Wellington.
Riley and her husband lost 15 of the 350 cows that were swept into the river.
