The North Sea is a sea of the Atlantic Ocean, located between Norway and Denmark in the east, the United Kingdom in the west, and Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and France in the south.
The Baltic Sea The Kattegat, or Kattegatt, is a bay of the North Sea and a continuation of the Skagerrak, bounded by Denmark and Sweden.
Major rivers that drain into the North Sea include the Forth (at Edinburgh), Elbe (at Cuxhaven), the Weser (at Bremerhaven), the Ems at Emden, the Rhine and Meuse (at Rotterdam), the Scheldt (at Flushing), the Thames, and the Humber (at Hull).

In historic times, the IJ was a long and narrow brackish bay that connected to the Zuiderzee (itself a bay of the North Sea) and stretched from Amsterdam in the east to Velsen in the west.
At the same time, the North Sea Canal was constructed in the former IJ basin to provide Amsterdam with access to the sea again and revive its ailing port.
It cut through the isthmus to connect to the North Sea near the town of Velsen; a new port, IJmuiden ("Ymouth") was built at its west end.

Amsterdam was threatened with demise, as with Bruges in the Middle Ages.
There was one last resort: an east-west canal directly across the lowlands and dunes at the point where Holland was most narrow.
That was the origin of the North Sea Canal, constructed between 1863 and 1876, with the mighty IJmuiden sea locks to ensure that Greater Amsterdam would not be flooded as the city lies below sea level.

The bucolic North Sea Route traverses a swath of interesting lands along and near the North Sea that are rarely visited by foreign tourists (except for Bruges).

On November 1st, 1876, King William III officially opened the North Sea Canal, which connected the harbour of Amsterdam directly with the North Sea.
On the occasion of its 125th anniversary the Teyler Museum is showing about 50 photographs of this ambitious project, made during the period 1868-1895.
The building of the jetty's in the sea, the factory for concrete blocks in the dunes at Velzen, the sluices during construction as well as after completion: everything was recorded for posterity.

It didn't take long before the Zuider locks became too small as the sea ships were getting bigger and bigger and so, in '89, the construction of the Nieuwe (New) lock was started, finishing 20 years after the canal was opened.
The maintenance of the pumping station, the big lock doors, and the depth of the canal are the responsibility of the Rijkswaterstaat Noord Holland, but the shipping movements and the piloting of the really big vessels are controlled by the Amsterdam Port Authorities.

It’s always a busy month for events on the canal our office overlooked by our office, but residents and visitors this year are presented with a choice of everything from bizarre through spectacular and sublime to extravagant.
The first event is the high point of the city’s annual Gay Pride programme – the Canal Parade, which follows a route along the entire length of the Prinsengracht.
At the mouth of the IJ just before it reaches the North Sea is IJmuiden’s Seaport Marina, where the HISWA in-water boat show will begin this year on August 30th.
