William Garson, in The Origin of North Shields and it's Growth (1926), says this was the old word for a kind of turf shelter constructed on the riverbank by fishermen.
Over the next sixty-five years, North Shields grew to be a village of two hundred cottages, and home to a thousand inhabitants.
The Priory had long since been reduced to a ruin, but the small village of North Shields clung to the shoreline, a ragged street of cottages and warehouses, in places no more than sixteen feet across, its inhabitants mostly seafarers; fishermen and their families, sailors from every country under the sun.

Robert Westall grew up in North Shields, on the banks of the River Tyne and set many of his tales in the places that we know and love today – Tynemouth, the Northumbrian Coast and Lindisfarne.
We noticed a discrepancy between these records and the Official Air Raid figures and the Deaths and Fatal Injuries at North Shields on May 3rd 1941 page on the GENUKI site which definitively lists the civilian casualties of the raid.

A scheme for a railway tunnel with a fast shuttle service of electric trains between Bedford Street in North Shields and Mile End Road in South Shields was put forward in 1902, getting Parliamentary approval but the idea was abandoned.
It would be fast and frequent and while support from South Shields council was forthcoming, Tynemouth council's support was less enthusiastic, despite some progress in Parliament.
A 1930 idea for a tunnel east of Newcastle produced four designs for a Shields tunnel but the government did not support the scheme and it too foundered.
