Generally, the North Shore is deemed to consist of the communities located within ZIP Codes 10303, 10302 and 10310 in their entirety, along with all of the area covered by 10301 except Sunnyside, and those parts of 10304 and 10305 that lie north of the Staten Island Expressway.
The North Shore was the first section of Staten Island to become more or less densely populated, a condition that had been achieved by the beginning of the 20th Century.
George is the county seat of Richmond County, as Staten Island is alternately known, and is the site of the passenger ferry connecting the island with downtown Manhattan.

Staten Island Railway (SIR) or Staten Island Rapid Transit (SIRT) is a rapid transit line operating in the Borough of Staten Island, New York City, USA.
Officially the Staten Island Rapid Transit Operating Authority (SIRTOA), and publically styled as MTA Staten Island Railway, the SIR is a direct subsidiary of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA).
The last passenger trains on both the North Shore and South Beach Branches ran on March 31, 1953 (the right-of-way of the South Beach Branch was eventually de-mapped and the tracks have been removed), and the North Shore Branch saw its last freight train in 1990, although the tracks still exist.

The North Shore Expressway, not to be confused with the proposed highway on Long Island with the same name, was to relieve mounting traffic pressure on the Staten Island Expressway.
The proposed route, which was to begin at the intersection of the Staten Island Expressway (I-278) and the West Shore Expressways (NY 440), was to continue the route of the West Shore Expressway north for about one mile.
South of the Staten Island Expressway, the shoreline route was to continue as the Shore Front Drive, a controlled-access parkway.

 Shore Front Drive (unbuilt)
The Shore Front Drive was part of Robert Moses' ultimate plan for a shorefront parkway route from Staten Island to the Hamptons, a goal that had been sought since he first became chairman of the New York State Parks Department in the 1920's under Governor Alfred E. Smith.
The proposed route, which was to bring to fruition part of Robert Moses' long-desired shorefront parkway between Staten Island and Montauk Point, was advanced as a state-sponsored measure to control beach erosion and promote orderly development of adjacent properties.
In 1972, with the establishment of the Gateway National Recreation Area along the Staten Island, Brooklyn and Queens shorelines, the Shore Front Drive was declared dead.
