North Shore is an industrial and residential suburb adjoining Corio Bay, extending northwards form Cowies Creek, Geelong North to the Shell Oil Refinery at Corio.
In 1892 the North Shore area was subdivided as a residential area and bayside retreat.
North Shore's census populations have been 124 (1921) and 365 (1947).

Off Victoria Road, in 1937 it was described as 17 chains long, with 33 residences and named 50 years before (1887) by the subdividing owners after the battle of Hastings.
Off Victoria Road, in 1937 it was described as 10 chains long, with 21 residences and named 60 years before (1877) after the property owner.
The part north of Beach haven Road later became John Bracken Way, after a Birkenhead City Councillor.   It is said there was a project to put a tramway here in the latter part of the nineteenth century.

In North Shore City the ancient volcano, Mt Victoria was the site of a Maori pa or fortified village of the local Kawerau tribe before the European era.
Devonport was the first settlement on the North Shore and was originally known as Flagstaff, after the signal station on the summit of Mount Victoria.
The Shore also came to be viewed as a playground for Aucklanders, and by the late 1870s several new hotels had sprung up.

They were proclaimed after Mount Victoria in Devonport, but before those elsewhere on Auckland's North Shore, especially Glenfield and O'Neill's Point.  The Catholic cemetery was proclaimed in 1861 and the Anglican in 1865.
Later, Agatha Parinui, a 9 year old child of Petera Parinui and Margarita Teoto of North Shore, was buried in the "North Shore Cemetery" on 9 March 1865.

Parts of Section 26A from that survey were set aside by the government for three cemeteries: the Anglican section of 1 acre and 24 perches, the Catholic 1 rood and 35.8 perches and the remainder (basically Presbyterian and Wesleyan) 1 acre and eventually 24.8 perches (1.7 perches was removed for roading).
An alternative site in Bayswater was purchased in 1890, and Mount Victoria was to be closed from 4 November 1890, but this closure was postponed as arrangements for the Cemetery at O'Neill's Point had yet to be finalised.
There have been efforts at different times by the North Shore branch of the N.Z. Genealogical Society to transcribe and trace the tombstones in the Cemetery, and these are published by the Society in their lists of cemetery records.

In response to the question about long term plans for the North Shore bus terminus, I can offer some information that may be of use.
My understanding (and others may want to correct me if I get this wrong) is that North Shore buses will not immediately head down to Britomart when that opens in the middle of next year.
All other bus services from the North Shore will also travel downtown using bus stops on Albert St before continuing uptown via Albert St to a new terminus in the Civic area.

Corio as a place has extended from North Shore, where the Corio Quay is formed around the outlet of Cowies Creek, to north-eastwards around Corio Bay to Avalon.
In 1851-2 subdivided land was sold at Cowies Creek, in anticipation of a town forming around a future port at the mouth of the creek.
As Geelong North and North Shore land was occupied, land at Corio was taken in the postwar years.

North Shore City Council has committed its support to Transit New Zealand's Harbour Bridge to City Project, which will feature a north-bound tunnel to increase traffic volume south of the harbour bridge.
"The proposed north-bound tunnel is great news for North Shore City motorists heading across the harbour bridge in peak periods because it will eliminate the bottle-neck at the Victoria Park flyover," says North Shore City's infrastructure and environment committee chairperson, Tony Barker.
