The Church is unusual for Shropshire in having a tall tower and spire, it was rebuilt in 1885-94 from an earlier 12th century church.
It is notable for the imposing seven-tier locks on the Shropshire Union Canal to negotiate the abrupt drop in level down to the Cheshire Plain.
Apart from Ludlow in the south of the county, it was the last garrison in Royalist Shropshire to survive against the Roundheads during the Civil War.

Shropshire County Council is now operating the service across a smaller area, but has increased the frequency so that it runs every day from Monday to Saturday.
She said: “The North Shropshire Link service is marvellous and has been a really necessary and vital service for me. I’ve used it to go to the dentist, the bank, shopping, visited people as a voluntary worker and even gone to college on it.
Although only the North Shropshire Links minibus is actually operated and funded directly by Shropshire County Council, to help people understand these changes more fully, the county council has produced a new leaflet covering all of the services in detail.

Carol Simmonds, of Stonehouse Farm, said for a while they had feared the worst, but now the cow was on the road to recovery.
