MIT maintains a strong rivalry with Harvard and other Ivy League schools which dates back to the earliest days of the Institute, when a merger of the two schools was frequently mooted and at one point officially agreed upon (ultimately cancelled after a faculty and alumni rebellion in opposition to the plan).

 Boston Transportation Resources -
North and South station are very close and there is no reason to build a costly station in the middle...
What I mean is YOU STILL NEED A CENTRAL connection between North and South Stations, just not with a station where people get on and off in between north and south.
Building a costly station along with the tunnel between North and South stations would be costly and probably be underutilized.

The latter has a station that is near Route 2 and I-495 but the station was surprisingly underwhelming; I was expecting much more of an intermodal station there.
