Walsham was captured during the raids of Viking Norse and Danes, and during the reign of King Canute, a Norseman named Skiotr (Sket) gave the village of Walsham along with its Church and estates to the Abbey of Saint Benet at Holme, near Horning.
During the fourteenth century North Walsham was at the heart of the woollen and weaving industry.
On the 25th June 1600, North Walsham was razed to the ground by a fire, which began at around six o'clock in the morning in the house of a person by the name of Dowle.

Paston College in North Walsham is considering relocating to new purpose-built facilities - a move that could free up its current town centre site for a major redevelopment and new community uses, to allow regeneration to continue and to meet the needs of a growing town.
Mr Mayne said that the college had investigated other locations but North Walsham's central position, its status as the district's largest town, its capacity for further growth and the ease of rail transport using the Bittern Line, were all important factors in the decision to stay.
The college was born in 1984 out of the Paston School and the North Walsham High School for Girls to provide a sixth form of sufficient size to offer a broad and modern choice of courses to students from local schools.

North Walsham is a town of slim side streets, whilst walking around note the narrowness of the depth of the shops, a result of them having begun their lives as medieval stalls set in the churchyard.
The market cross was built in the middle of the 16th century by one Tomas Thirlby who was then the Bishop of Norwich and lord of the manor of North Walsham and was used to collect market tolls, it was destroyed by fire in 1600 and subsequently rebuilt in 1602.

A digital temperature gauge on the wall of a garage showed the temperature to be 12 degrees celsius, but it felt colder due to my being damp after the rain and the slight wind.
Because this was a fairly short walk, I decided to extend the walk by walking inland along roads and footpaths to the little town of North Walsham.
In places (particularly just to the north of Mundesley) the groynes were quite difficult to get past, with one end in the sea and the other end embedded into the cliff.
