The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP or Mounties), originally the North West Mounted Police, is both the federal and national police force of Canada.
In 1903 jurisdiction was extended to the Arctic coast, and in 1912 to northern Manitoba.
On February 1, 1920 the RNWMP was merged with the Dominion Police and was renamed the Royal Canadian Mounted Police with responsibility for federal law enforcement in all provinces and territories.

The RCMP was created as the North West Mounted Police on May 23, 1873 by Sir John A. Macdonald, the first prime minister of Canada, with the intent of bringing law and order to (and asserting Canadian sovereignty over) the North-West Territories (which then included modern day Alberta and Saskatchewan).
Members of the NWMP were known to exchange kit with US cavalry units along the border and it is suggested that this was the initial source for the trousers; however, blue trousers were considered early on, although with a white strap.
Although it is a police force, the RCMP has the status of a regiment of dragoons, and as such is entitled to wear battle honours for its war service.

While the Mounted Police created a presence in the territory in 1895, the NWMP contingent in the Yukon grew from 19 men to 285 at the height of the Gold Rush in 1898 to ensure that law and order was maintained.
Police services were extended throughout Canada, while the Force took on the responsibility for intelligence and security duties in addition to its normal police and crime prevention work.

 Inspector Dickens of the North West Mounted Police
In 1883 Dickens was transferred to Fort Pitt on the North Saskatchewan River and placed in charge of the small, poorly located fortification which lay on the main river highway supply route from Fort Carlton to Fort Edmonton.
Inspector Dickens repeatedly warned of unrest in the area and in March 1885 it all came to a head with NWMP battles at Duck Lake followed by the burning of Fort Carlton then the Crees murdering priests and Hudson Bay Company employees and family members at Frog Lake.
The NWMP detachment were outnumbered and outgunned 200 to 20.
