West and south-west of the Khyber again is the country of the Afridis and the Orakzais.
The conquered strata of the population speak servile Indian dialects, called Hindki in the north and Jatki in the south, while Gujari is spoken by the large Gujar population in the hills of Hazara and north of Peshawar.

Even within Pakistan it is regarded as a "radical state" and a "backwater" due to the rise of Islamist parties in the province and purported support for the remnants of the Taliban who are believed by some to be hiding in the province.
