Administratively, North Woolwich was part of Woolwich from 1877 and later the Metropolitan Borough of Woolwich, but was absorbed into the London Borough of Newham in 1965 when Woolwich south of the Thames became part of the London Borough of Greenwich.
North Woolwich consists of two tracts of land, totalling 412 acres (1.7 km²), on the north bank of the River Thames in east London.
It is north of Woolwich proper which is on the south bank of the Thames; they are linked by the Woolwich Ferry and the Woolwich foot tunnel.

Plans for a new Docklands Light Railway station at Langdon Park in the Borough of Tower Hamlets have moved a step closer as the Department for Transport (DfT) announced it is to appraise the project ahead of making a final decision on funding in the autumn.
Docklands Light Railway Ltd (DLRL) has shortlisted four main contractors for the tender competition to build a new station at Stratford to be funded by Transport for London’s five-year £10bn Investment Programme.

 Stephen Timms MP - DLR Extension
Mr Timms welcomed the news that the new station at King George V, North Woolwich, is set to open at the end of 2005.
Plans are now being considered to extend the line even further to Woolwich Arsenal, linking the north and south via a tunnel under the Thames, and this further extension could be completed by 2008.
At one stage, it was thought that the extension would terminate at London City Airport, but, following an intervention from Mr Timms, it was agreed that the line would continue on to North Woolwich as part of the current project.
