Many visitors to the moors are engaged in outdoor pursuits, particularly walking; the parks has a network of rights of way almost 2300 km (1400 miles) in length, and most of the areas of open moorland will be open access under the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000.
The moors have a not changed much in the past 50 years, and are often used a backdrop to British television programmes and films, one of the most famous being the popular ITV series, Heartbeat.
The North Yorkshire Moors Railway was used for scenes in the recent Harry Potter films.

What is unusual about this stretch of railway is that it is owned by a charitable trust and that all the trains are hauled by steam locomotives.
The railway operates a daily service from 29th March until 2nd November and the next three weekends of November through some of the most spectacular scenery in Yorkshire and even calls at Goathland which viewers of the television series "Heartbeat" will recognize as "Aidensfield" whilst warlocks and witches may tell you it's "Hogsmeade Station"!
The Railway has a substantial stock of British Railways Mark 1 coaches which give a feel of rail travel in the '50's and '60's but more exciting are the pre-nationalization coaches of the London and North Eastern Railway.

The railway tycoon George Hudson acquired the line in 1845 for £80,000 and he quickly introduced steam locomotives after investing in wide scale improvements and new bridges and a tunnel.
During the early seventies the Society was replaced by the North York Moors Historical Railway Trust, and the many members made it possible to commence preparations for a return of steam train passenger services on the line.

It has a foot bridge to the car park which daddy says gave good photo opportunities.
It sits in a village in the middle of the moors which was an interesting journey by car !
2nd longest steam line in Britain, but easily the most spectacular, especially as you go over the top of the moors and go down into Grosmont and criss-cross a stream over high bridges, or cling around the edge of the hill.

The car park up here is a useful starting point for walks around the Hole, with gently graded moorland tracks heading south to the village green at Levisham (where the Horseshoe has good food).
From the forest edge you can cross the open moor for an encounter with the strange mushroom-shaped rock outcrops known as the Bridestones.
