It was also at Northallerton† that the English Commissioners paid over to the Scots the first moiety of the £200,000, for which sum they had contracted to deliver the king into the custody of the Roundheads.
The village is situated 6½ miles N. of Northallerton, and 1½ miles from Welbury station, on the Leeds and Stockton branch of the North-Eastern railway.

The Great North Road from Thirsk to Northallerton is now the A168, relatively quiet now, now that a new north road in the shape of the A19(T) completes a dual carriageway from the A1 at Dishforth to the A1 north of Newcastle.
Northallerton's origin as a town is generally regarded as Saxon, with a stone church built on the site in 885, possibly on the site of an earlier wooden one.
The 18th century saw the refurbishment of much of the Northallerton road frontages with pleasant Georgian architecture while the population was crowded around narrow passages or yards behind, in what for a long time remained virtually a one-street town.

In the meantime, the existing parish workhouses continued in operation at Northallerton for housing the able-bodied, and at Brompton for children and the aged.
Brompton workhouse closed the same year, leaving just the old Northallerton parish workhouse which could only accommodate 42 inmates — it was described as "one of the most wretched poorhouses in England" with classification and segregation of the inmates severely lacking.
