Northbridge (computing) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The northbridge is traditionally one of the two chips in the core logic chipset on a PC motherboard, the other being the Southbridge.
The northbridge on a particular system's motherboard is the most prominent factor in dictating the number, speed, and type of CPU(s) and the amount, speed, and type of RAM that can be used.
The Northbridge plays an important part in how far a computer can be overclocked, as its frequency is used as a baseline for the CPU to establish its own operating frequency.

Northbridge is an Intel chipset that communicates with the computer processor and controls interaction with memory, the Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) bus, Level 2 cache, and all Accelerated Graphics Port (AGP) activities.
Northbridge communicates with the processor using the frontside bus (FSB).
Northbridge is one part of a two-part chipset called Northbridge/Southbridge.

Ninjalane - Microcool NorthPole Northbridge Cooler Review
Northbridge coolers can vary depending on the chipset and motherboard configuration though for the most part this practice follows the "targeted design" of the product.
For instance nForce2 Northbridges coolers aimed at the overclocker will often be oversized or come with a small fan to help ensure overclockability and increase stability.
The first step is to remove the stock Northbridge cooler and clean away any leftover thermal pad material.

Miniature sized computers are steadily gaining in popularity as demand for and acceptance of them has sky-rocketed.
They are, at least to my knowledge, one of the only companies in the computer industry that uses titanium on their cases.

In the continuing fight for silent computing, ABIT have announced an innovative weapon in the Battle of the Buzz: Silent OTES.
Over the years, as bus speeds have increased, the humble Northbridge chipset has gone from bare chip, to passive heatsink cooler, and to the present day where a fan is required.
The copper-based aluminium Northbridge heatsink transfers the generated heat via a heatpipe to pure copper heat exchanger or mini radiator next to the PS2 sockets (pictured), where the airflow from the CPU heatsink will blow the heat out the back of your PC.

This works especially well if the computer is in an enclosed area where sound is prone to echoing.

Virtual-Hideout.Net | Reviews | Thermaltake Extreme Spirit Chipset Cooler Review
The Northbridge chipset is primarily involved with facilitating communication between the CPU and main memory, and its role has become an increasingly demanding one.
Once we had the project box up and running, I noticed that even though the CPU was running nice and cool, the Northbridge was hot to the touch (no doubt caused by the bump in voltage necessary to achieve a mild overclock).
I have tested two other Northbridge coolers on other boards, and this one seems to do the job quite well, although perhaps not to the standard set by the Swiftech MCX159-A (review available here).

There are many things that you can try to fix this, like a more efficient CPU heatsink, improving your case's airflow, playing with the system's voltages and so on...
After all, its frequency is one of the things that is being increased when you are overclocking.
The northbridge is the hub of activity between your processor, RAM, and AGP so if it is overheating your computer will simply not function up to its potential.

The link between the CPU and Northbridge is called Front-side bus, which is (usually) the same speed as the Memory Bus, and can be varied, as when overclocking.

First of all, to get the computers CPU up to an ambient temperature, I left it booted up for 60mins in Windows XP, with Winamp 5 playing my music in the background.
This give the computer a chance to reach its normal operating temperature so that appropriate temperature readings can be taken.
This is not necessarily the best way to put a computer under load, but nonetheless it provides a half hour long gruelling exercise that puts all areas of the computer under pressure for testing, and is bound to cause the ‘Prescott’ CPU to throw out more heat.

Since its debut in 2000, Transmeta Corp. has always positioned its Crusoe processor as a balance of computing performance and low power consumption, optimized for longer battery life in slimline subnotebooks or operation without noisy cooling fans in blade servers or thin-client terminals.
Like Crusoe, Efficeon (the name is supposed to suggest a new eon, or era, of efficient computing) performs the feat of fully compatible, off-the-shelf Windows and Linux software execution without actually using the x86 architecture of most Intel and AMD chips.
For PC designers, this means higher memory performance and a lower chip count, the latter reducing both system power consumption and motherboard real-estate requirements.

The Northbridge also supports a total of 22 PCI Express lanes, with 16 being dedicated to the X16 graphics slot, two acting as a link between the North and Southbridge chips, and the four left available for PCI Express X1 slots.
Note that neither the Northbridge nor the Southbridge have integrated Ethernet though.
The two differing Northbridges, however, are pin and BIOS compatible, so implementation at the motherboard level for both chipsets should be easy for the OEMs that'll be releasing boards based on the RADEON XPRESS 200.
