The Northern Areas (Urdu: شمالی علاقہ جات) or Gilgit-Baltistan is the northernmost region of Pakistani-administered Kashmir.
The Northern Areas comprise six districts in three regions: the two Baltistan districts of Skardu and Ghangche, the two Gilgit districts of Ghizer, Gilgit and the two Diamer Districts of Diamer and Astore.
The Northern Areas border the Wakhan corridor of Afghanistan to the northwest, the Xinjiang territory of China to the northeast, the Indian-controlled state of Jammu and Kashmir to the southeast, the region of Pakistani-administered Azad Kashmir to the southeast and the North-West Frontier Province to the west.

The northern flying squirrel can be distinguished from the southern flying squirrel by its larger size; the gray base of its ventral hairs as opposed to a white base in the southern species; the relatively longer upper tooth row; and the short, stout baculum (penis bone) of the males.
Northern flying squirrels are relatively gregarious and are known to share nests; however, the spectacular winter nesting aggregations reported for the southern flying squirrel (up to 5O in a nest) are unknown for this species.
The northern flying squirrel is typically a species found in more northern areas, and it was well into the 2Oth century before the species was found to occur in the eastern United States to the south of New York.

The Northern Areas are an integral part of the Jammu and Kashmir state but it is the Pakistan government that administers them.
The assumption of control by Pakistan of the Northern Areas is based on the so-called Karachi Agreement which is of doubtful legality, signed as it was by Chaudhri Ghulam Abbas in 1949 in his capacity as head of the Muslim Conference.
Ironically, the AK High Court whose judgment had been overturned had anticipated this and observed at para 194 of its judgment that to hold that the Northern Areas were not part of Azad Kashmir nor a part of Pakistan was self-contradictory.

 Neglected Northern Areas
Lahore: ELECTED members of the Northern Areas Council, on a visit to Lahore, have complained that the present constitutional limbo in which they exist is retarding the development of the area, and have suggested that the Northern Areas be absorbed in Azad Kashmir or their Chief Executive be an elected member.
The Northern Areas were part of the Kashmir State, but in 1935, by the Treaty of Jammu, the British took over both the Gilgit District, as well as the Gilgit Agency on a 60-year lease, which was declared lapsed, along with all other treaties with princely states in the Indian Independence Act.
The Northern Areas' claim is therefore correct that their freedom struggle was separate from that waged by Ch Ghulam Abbas, Sardar Qayyum and Sardar Ibrahim in Kashmir proper, which started later, and which established a Free State rather than declared accession.

An analysis of weather data and the top zone (0 to 4 inch) soil moisture for the canola producing areas of North Dakota and Minnesota for the 10 day period ending July 20th 2005, indicates that there are small localized areas of high risk areas for sclerotinia development in northern part of the mapped area.
The majority of the canola is in the late ripening period however some canola that was planted in June in northern areas may still be in early flowering stage.
There are a few areas in the northern part of the mapped are that are over 100% corresponding to the high risk forecast.
