BELFAST, Northern Ireland – In one of the world's biggest robberies, thieves took the families of two top bankers hostage and forced the executives to help them steal more than $39 million from the vaults of a Belfast bank's main office, authorities said yesterday.
Experts said Monday's raid on the Northern Bank cash center was the biggest robbery since 1987, when thieves made off with about $65 million in cash and other valuables from the Knightsbridge Safe Deposit Center in London.
Kinkaid said the bank hadn't been able to provide an exact figure for the amount of stolen, partly because police shut down its offices for forensic examination, but he said it might exceed $39 million.

The employees were forced to hand over the money from a cash center at the headquarters of Northern Bank in central Belfast after close of business on Monday by raiders who had taken over their homes on Sunday night.
Northern Bank is Northern Ireland's largest retail bank and is owned by National Australia Bank.
Police said they were investigating whether one of Northern Ireland's paramilitary groups, which remain heavily involved in crime despite observing cease-fires in the province's long-running sectarian conflict, had been involved in the raid.

Northern Bank (IOM) wrote to its customers last month advising them it was shutting its doors and offering the option of either having their deposits returned to them or moving funds to the Isle of Man branch of Northern Bank (UK).
This makes Northern Bank one of the smallest Irish banks in the Isle of Man. According to a KPMG report, Bank of Ireland had the equivalent of €1.2 billion on deposit in the Isle of Man, while AIB had the equivalent of €891m, closely followed by Anglo Irish Bank with €876m.
Northern Bank (IOM) has been operating for more than 20 years and many of its customers opened accounts when money-laundering legislation was either lax or non-existent.

In what is just under two weeks, Northern Ireland has seen a tremendous amount of journalistic and political activity since the announcement by the PSNI's Chief Constable that he suspected the IRA was behind the UK's biggest bank robbery.
Although Sinn Fein was emphatic from the beginning that the announcement was politically motivated, commentators were quick seize on the indirect nature of the IRA's denial.
As the week went on we saw some of the humour which was such a feature in the US election, with mock emails, forged bank notes and film trailers hitting inboxes in Northern Ireland and further afield - with Sinn Fein the consistent butt of all the jokes.

An Australian-owned bank in Northern Ireland is investigating a novel way to prevent the gang who staged a massive bank raid last week from enjoying their haul - by withdrawing all the notes involved from circulation.
A source at the Northern Bank, owned by National Australia Bank, said it was considering making all notes of the denominations seized in Monday night's audacious raid illegal tender, rendering the proceeds useless at a stroke.
Regular Bank of England notes also circulate in Northern Ireland and could be used in place of the withdrawn Northern Bank notes.
