The Northern Expedition (Chinese: 北伐; Hanyu Pinyin: běi fá) was a military campaign led by the Kuomintang (Chinese Nationalist Party or KMT) and the Communist Party of China or CPC from 1926 to 1927.
It should not be confused with the Northern Expeditions during the era of the Three Kingdoms.
Today, the Northern Expedition is viewed positively both in Mainland China and on Taiwan because it ended a period of disorder and started the formation of an effective Chinese central government.

The third major seagoing expedition to the northern Far East was the one commanded by Lieutenant Billings, which is known as the Northeastern Secret Geographical and Astronomical Expedition (1785-1793).
Billings was to chart the northern part of the Chukchi Peninsula (this was what Dmitry Laptev had failed to do) and to try to find a landmass north of Kolyma, the first evidence of which was traced back to the 17th century and which many viewed as a separate continent.
Lieutenant Ferdinand Wrangel and Midshipman Fyodor Matyushkin charted the Siberian coast in 1820-24 from the Indigirka to Kolyuchinskaya Guba and the Bear Islands, and explored the basin of the Greater and Lesser Anyui rivers.

True to form the area has not changed a bit and the bluffs in the painting are located near the 11.00 am halt on the attached sketchs by Gregory.
The paintings on the boulder are absent but we found the cave mentioned by Baines across the creek, which has numerous aboriginal paintings, and I believe he transferred some of these into this painting.
