The centrepiece of Northern Ireland's geography is Lough Neagh, at 392 km² the largest freshwater lake in the British Isles.
Ireland was partitioned in 1921 under the terms of the Government of Ireland Act 1920 between six of the nine Ulster counties in the northeast (forming Northern Ireland) and the remaining twenty-six counties of the south and west (forming the Irish Free State in 1922).

In effect the Executive is a coalition between the four major parties including, the Ulster Unionist Party, Social Democratic and Labour Party, Sinn Féin and the Democratic Unionist Party.
