In the Republic of Ireland, the Minister for Transport, acting through the Department of Transport, is responsible for the state's road network, rail network, public transport, airports and several other areas.
Public transport is mainly in the hands of a statutory corporation, Coras Iompair Éireann, and its subsidaries, Bus Átha Cliath - Dublin Bus, Bus Éireann - Irish Bus, and Iarnrod Éireann - Irish Rail.
Ireland is one of the last large inhabited islands in the world without a tunnel or bridge connection.

The Northern Ireland Transport Holding Company (NITHCo) is a government owned body which was established in 1967 to take over the railway and bus services of the Ulster Transport Authority (UTA), namely Northern Ireland Railways (NIR) and Ulsterbus.
In 1973 Citybus took over the bus services of the Belfast Corporation Transport Department.
From 1971 until 1994 NITHCo ran Belfast International Airport through its subsidiary Northern Ireland Airports Limited (NIAL).

Northern Ireland Transport Holding Company (NITHC) is a public corporation established under the Transport Act (NI) 1967 to oversee the provision of public transport in Northern Ireland.

Research shows that three quarters of Northern Ireland petitioners do not argue fault; they are probably so stigmatised that they cannot publicly talk about about why their marriages broke down, and they find other reasons such as the fact and duration of separation.
People in Northern Ireland pay the same National Insurance contributions and the same taxes as people elsewhere in the country, and it is right and proper that they should receive the same benefits at the same time and at the same rates.

The Northern Ireland Transport Holding Company, which runs Northern Ireland Railways, Ulsterbus and Citybus on behalf of the British Department of the Environment, owns three car parks in Belfast valued at over £10 million.
John Dowdall, head of the Northern Ireland Audit Office, said his organisation believed that "the provision of city-centre parking for private cars would seem to present some conflict of interest for a company whose main objective should be the provision and promotion of public transport".
It also questioned the need for the three transport companies to hold reserves of £10.5 million against potential liability of third party insurance claims, when such claims had never exceeded £2.8 million in any year.

Public transport users in Northern Ireland are still not happy with the standard of service they receive, a report has said.
Only half of passengers are satisfied with the punctuality of buses and trains, according to a report published by the General Consumer Council, Translink and the Department of Regional Development.
The survey was carried out by PricewaterhouseCoopers on behalf of the Northern Ireland Transport Holding Company as part of the monitoring of Translink Passenger Charter.

The Transport Act (NI) of 1948 empowered a new company, the Ulster Transport Authority, to take over the the Northern Ireland Road Transport Board and the Belfast and County Down Railway on 1/10/1948.
Two Transport Acts, passed in 1966 and 1967, divided the UTA into separate companies under the control of the Northern Ireland Transport Holding Company.
The railways were operated by Ulster Transport Railways from Autumn 1966 until June 1967 when they became Northern Ireland Railways.
