I've been lucky enough to get to know several Northern Irish loyalists quite well over the years, and, while they are, to a man (and woman) great folks to go out drinking with (and boy, can they drink), their political views often make Oliver Cromwell look moderate.
Might be the fact in Northern Ireland Catholics have been historically treated as second-class citizens [and there's still a lot of prejudice], and institutionalized prejudice isn't something I can call 'better' than lack of access to abortions.

It reminds me of what happened in the case of the 'green ensign' that was attributed to Ireland in some foreign flag charts of the 19th century.
Note that the flag of Northern Ireland of the years 1953-1972 was still in use after 1972, both by protestants as a political sign of loylaism towards the UK and as an emblem/flag when the Northern Ireland football team played international games, wasn't it?
I remember there was a version of the Northern Irish flag used by the Loyalists some years ago that sported a white fimbriated Union Jack in the corner of the flag.

One wonders if, as is so typical of this place, knocking the NI team and its supporters - the vast majority of whom are continually well-behaved and the envy of others for their loyalty in adversity - is really just a way of having a go at what they perceive as 'the other side'.
Protocol is that the flag flown for the team is that of the team rather than the nation, as in England, Scotland, Wales, Faroe Islands etc. I think it's technically whatever flag the FA tells FIFA/UEFA it is using.

Danny Boy has often been espoused as a possibility for Northern Ireland, though recently I have thought of “I Vow To Thee My Country”, which I think is quite a rousing tune, until I realised its perhaps a little too militaristic in tone.
One point that seems to elude people, particularly the so called “PC Brigade” is that most football supporting Nationalists will refuse to pledge allegiance or affinity to the very concept of Northern Ireland, and would therefore would not be in the slightest inclined to lend full-scale support to its representative football team.
The other site is the CAIN website, and it describes the Red Hand and the Crown as the Government of Northern Ireland (Ulster Flag) and the yellow and red flag without the crown as “Province of Ulster Flag (9 counties)”.
