British Isles - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The earliest quotation of "British Isles" given by the authoritative Oxford English Dictionary is in 1621.
In 1140 the Hebridean Islands, the Isle of Man and Antrim came under the Norse-Gael rule of the Lord of the Isles who kept a varying degree of independence until the Hebrides were forfeited to Scotland in 1493.
Sometimes, an ambiguous phrase such as "these Isles" or "the Isles" is used, thus utilising the same logic used when referring to the Persian Gulf as the "Gulf".

British Isles   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-07)
The British Isles is a traditional term used to identify the group of islands off the northwest coast of Europe consisting of Great Britain, Ireland and the many smaller adjacent islands.
Politically, the archipelago is now divided between two sovereign states, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, and three British crown dependencies: the Isle of Man, the Bailiwick of Guernsey and the Bailiwick of Jersey.
The term British Isles can lead to misinterpretation; this was exemplified by an embarrassing and controversial misunderstanding by the then American First Lady Nancy Reagan during an Irish visit.

Whilst William Sinclair retained the other property he held in the Isles, Kirkwall Castle and the office of Earl, the Earldom were transferred to the Scottish Crown at the earliest opportunity [20 May 1471 Scots Acts 1471, c.4.].
Northern practice continued to consider them closed and the property of the adjacent maritime population.
If the Isles’ communities are to survive in the long-term, that survival must be based on the return of their local natural resources.

British Isle -- Recommendations and Resources
To begin with, the term "British Isles" is the commonly used and accepted term which refers to the group of islands off the northwest coast of Europe which includes the islands of Great Britain and Ireland and the many smaller adjacent islands.
Why a category of British Isles, lets go for broke and change the category to "Islands of the North Atlantic" or even "Atlandtic Islands", I am happy to do the work and I think it would be as useful, if not more useful than the current category.
Northern Ireland will produce different problems of course, but I have yet to find a Northern Ireland/Northern Irish (even which of these forms is correct is disputed!) mathematician to trouble me. Will probably be added as "N.I." though, when the time comes.

British Isles - Biocrawler definition:British Isles - Biocrawler   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-07)
The British Isles are a group of islands off the northwest coast of Europe consisting of Great Britain (that is England, Scotland, and Wales), Ireland and the many smaller adjacent islands.
Nonetheless today, because the 'British Isles' include the whole of Ireland, as well as three crown dependencies which are not a part of the United Kingdom, the term is considered an anachronism by some, or a source of potential confusion or offence.
The inhabitants of the British Isles in classical times were the Celtic Bruthin or Priteni, who invaded Britain and Ireland some time before the 5th century BC.

Seabirds and other Marine Vertebrates - 1988
Around the British Isles, for example, adult demersal fish such as cod (Gadus morhua), haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus), and whiting (Merlangius merlangus) do not normally occur in the diet of the seabirds that are capable of diving to the seabed in shallower areas of the sea.
Northern gannets and great fl-backed gulls were considerably quicker at swallowing fish than herring gulls or great skuas and also managed to swallow larger fish.
For anatomical reasons northern fulmars are unable to swallow whole fish efficiently unless these are particularly small, so that northern gannets and adult great fl-backed gulls obtain the pick of the discard fish and generally achieve the highest feeding rate on discards (table 7.7).

Together Shetland and Orkney, the Northern Isles, represent the geology of the north of Scotland in miniature and provide a summary of Orcadian Basin geology.
The geology of Shetland is varied and rather complex, principally as a result of a large number of major north-south running faults, including the northward continuation of the Great Glen Fault, which has brought a large number of different rock types together in a narrow zone.
Shetland displays the geology of northern Scotland in miniature, offering the chance to see ancient Lewisian Gneisses, 1000 million year old rocks of the Moine Supergroup and younger Dalradian rocks (600-700 million year old), in the space of a few kilometres.

The remainder of the British Isles, and the S after the rain had cleared, had showery day, with snow and hail in the Northern Isles; thunder was also reported from here.
