The Northern League is an Independent minor league baseball league which operates in the Midwestern United States and the Canadian provinces of Manitoba and Alberta.
This league was renamed the Northern League the following year, but the league again disbanded because of a lack of manpower during World War I.
The league expanded from six to eight teams with the addition of franchises of the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (Fargo, North Dakota) and Madison Black Wolf (Madison, Wisconsin).

Minor leagues are professional baseball leagues which are at a lower pay level and play in smaller cities and towns than do the major leagues.
The existence of the minor league system is partly due to major league baseball's ability to include a reserve clause in the contracts with minor league baseball players which gives a major league team exclusive rights to a player even after the contract has expired.
The first league recognized as minor was the Northwestern League, which in 1883 entered into an agreement with the two major leagues at the time (the National League and the American Association), under which it would have a lower salary limit than the other two leagues.

Miles Wolff, who created an entirely new segment of minor league baseball with the founding of the Northern League in 1993, has stepped down as commissioner of the league.
The Northern League is already looking for a new commissioner, who presumably will move the league office out of Durham, N.C. The alliance between the Northern Central and East is also not likely to continue after this season, so the East would have to be renamed.
There have been rumblings among the original Northern League teams that Wolff has focused more on the other leagues, and he acknowledges that he finds the most enjoyment in building leagues up.

This wooden bat (instead of metal) league is an NCAA sanctioned league made up of the best college players across the country, yes some from Division I, that don't get paid so they can retain their amateur status.
You could argue that this league is more exciting than the old Northern League because the players are up and comers that are looking to break into the big leagues for the first time as opposed to players that have toiled a long time in the minors looking for one last shot.

It would be cool to see something like the Northern League, where amateurs can play and you can see their stats and all.
Or, in the normal league, have it access alternate names files 5% of the time (for example), so a certain percent of prospects are foreign.
I run a New England league, and it seems the number of Latinos and Asians is disproportionate for small-time regional baseball.
