Light infantry often fought in close co-ordination with heavy infantry, where they could screen the heavy infantry from harassing fire, and the heavy infantry could intervene to protect the light infantry from attacks of enemy heavy infantry or cavalry.
Unusually, light infantry officers often carried muskets as well and their swords were lighter and curved, as opposed to the heavy, straighter swords of other infantry officers.
U.S. Army light infantry are highly "encouraged" to test for and obtain the Expert Infantryman Badge (EIB), which requires around 35 individual tests (each quite complex) and expert qualification with the rifle, and to meet the EIB standard on the physical training test.

The Northern Light Infantry (NLI) is an infantry regiment of the Pakistan Army.
The majority of this regiment's personnel come from the native Gilgitis, Baltis, Brushos, Wakhis and Khowars etc. It was formed in 1973 with the amalgamation of the Northern Scouts along with its Scout wings: the Karakoram Scouts, Northern Scouts and Gilgit Scouts.
The Northern Light Infantry was made a regiment of the Pakistan army only after its performance in the Kargil War in 1999; prior to this it was a paramilitary force.

The 196th Infantry Brigade was first organized in 1921 as an element of the Army Reserve's 98th Division.
The 196th Light Infantry Brigade was raised again at Fort Devens, MA in September 1965 and originally scheduled to be sent to the Dominican Republic in mid-1966, but was rushed to Vietnam instead and posted in the western portion of the III Corps Tactical Zone.
It operated throughout northern Vietnam, and after the division closed out of Vietnam, 29 November 1971, the 196th Light Infantry Brigade was reconstituted as a separate (provisional) brigade-sized element to safeguard the same area of operations.

The 12th Infantry was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for its valor in the defense of Luxembourg during the Battle of the Bulge.
Consequently on 1 October 1963, the 2nd Battle Group, 12th Infantry was reorganized and redesignated as the 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry and reassigned to the 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson, Colorado where it joined the 1st and 3rd Battalions of the 12th Infantry.
The 4th Battalion, 12th Infantry was activated and assigned to the 199th Light Infantry Brigade in June 1966 and went with the Brigade to Vietnam where it was based at Long Binh near Saigon.
