In very old lighthouses, the light source was a kerosene lamp, and the lenses were rotated by a clockwork assembly wound daily by lighthouse keepers.
Lighthouse is also a pop music group best known for their Top 40 songs "One Fine Morning" (1971) and "Sunny Days" (1972).

 Orkney Islands Lighthouses

The lighthouse marks the northwestern corner of the Orkneys on the island of Westray.

The lighthouse is on the point separating Loch Kanaird and Loch Broom, marking the north side of the entrance to the upper portion of Loch Broom and the harbor of Ullapool.
The lighthouse is at the northern tip of the island, marking the entrances to the Sound of Raasay to the west and the Inner Sound to the east.

Northern Lights is the General Lighthouse Authority in Scotland and the Isle of Man. Trinity House is the General Lighthouse Authority for England, Wales, Channel Islands and Gibraltar, and responsible for pilotage throughout the UK.
The defaced ensigns/jacks of ships operated by various commissions before 1864 were red, but since lighthouse boards were not specifically mentioned in the Royal Proclamations that introduced the defaced Red Ensigns, the Northern Lighthouse Commissioners may have felt free to devise their own ensign, and chose to have one in Scottish colours.

The first intimation of the need for a lighthouse on Sanda came in the 1820s, repeated in 1825 when "The Christiania" was lost on Patersons rock.
At first Trinity House recommended that The Mull Of Kintyre lighthouse be moved, but it was rejected by the N L B (Northern Lighthouse Board), who placed a beacon on Patersons rock.
Subsistence farming and fishing was the mainstay although a Mr McCoosh mentioned on one gravestone was a diver for the N L B. Wrecks continued despite the best efforts of the keepers, the most notable being that of the Byron Darnton in 1946.

In December 1900, three lighthouse keepers of the Flannan Islands Lighthouse, to the west of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, disappeared in mysterious circumstances; what is commonly known as the 'Flannan Isle Disaster'.
The last written entries in the lighthouse log were for the 13th December but particulars for the 14th December and for the time of extinguishing the light on the 15th December were noted on slate for transfer later to the log.
The official report on the case concluded that the lighthouse keepers had been the victim of extreme weather conditions and had probably been swept into the sea by an exceptionally large and unexpected wave.

The lighthouse settlement scarce encroached beyond its fences; over the top of the first brae the ground was all virgin, the world all shut out, the face of things unchanged by any of man's doings.
In fact, the Lighthouse Board had appointed Rennie as Chief Engineer in 1806 and as such he (along with Stevenson) duly submitted Designs and Reports for the Board’s consideration, although it would appear he actually visited the site only twice during the years of construction from1807 to 1811.
It was his lighthouse, however, that both Stevenson and Rennie freely admit to drawing on for their own designs for the construction of the Bell Rock.

Although the earliest Scottish lighthouse was constructed soon after 1635 the origins of the Northern Lighthouse Board date to 1782, when a number of severe storms highlighted the lack of lighthouses around the Scottish coasts.
The earliest lighthouse in Scotland was built on the Isle of May by James Maxwell of Innerwick and John Cunninghame of Barnes, under a patent from Charles I of 1635.
The lighthouse appears to have been running normally until the 15th of December, but when members of the crew of the Hesperus, one of the lighthouse service vessels, made a routine visit to the lighthouse 11 days later, none of the staff were to be found.

Other lighthouses and similar buildings on the Scottish coast, such as bell towers, were simple structures and were built and maintained principally by individual burghs or by local acts of parliament.
The Merchant Shipping Act of 1894 confirmed the Commissioners of Northern Lighthouses as the authority for lighthouses in Scotland and the adjacent seas and islands, and the Isle of Man. The Merchant Shipping Act of 1979 freed the Commissioners from the supervision of Trinity House.

The first lighthouse to mark the entrance to Carquinez Strait and the Napa River was built at the southern end of Mare Island in 1873.
The side of the lighthouse with dormers in the roof faced the northern side of the strait, and a three-story tower was attached near the southwest corner of the structure.
The Carquinez Strait Lighthouse served until 1951 when it was replaced by a smaller beacon and fog signal at the end of the now extended pier.

In 1984 the Northern Lighthouse Board embarked on a long term solarisation programme, replacing many of the original structures with low maintenance aluminium towers and installing solar electric power for the lights.
There are currently 95 Northern Lighthouse Board solar powered land based sites from the north tip of the Shetland Isles to Chicken Rock at the south end of the Isle of Man. The range of light varies between three and 23 miles.

At midnight on Tuesday 31 March 1998 the Northern Lighthouse Board switched the last of its manned lighthouses to a remotely monitored, fully automated, system.
The lighthouse was first lit in 1862 - following protracted negotiations between the Lighthouse Board and staff at the Board of Trade over whether the light should be fixed or flashing.

CLS failed to notify the Northern Lighthouse Board because “other more pressing matters caused it to escape from memory.” Occasional Keeper Roderick MacKenzie, who was responsible for observing the light from nearby Gallen Head, also failed to notice the outage.
The Board also noted that while a furious gale was pounding the islands on December 12th and 13th, it had calmed considerably on the 14th.

Built over almost two years by Thomas Smith (1752 - 1815), first engineer to the Northern Lighthouse Board, this was one of the earliest lights to be established when it was completed in 1788.

The station buildings, designed by the board's engineer, P.H. Hysolop, are laid out in a hollow square with covered passageways, giving protection from the high winds on this exposed headland.

Origin: Now that there are no manned lighthouses in Scotland, I asked the Northern Lighthouse Board in Edinburgh for information about this lighthouse.
The lighthouse is the third tallest in Scotland (North Ronaldsay and Skerryvore being taller) and bears two distinguishing broad horizontal red bands.
The one which turned out to be the most important work of his life and one which undoubtedly of notable engineering achievement, was the Bell Rock or Inchcape Lighthouse lying some 12 miles off the Angus coast.
