 NORDLYS - Northern Lights
Compared to the light from the sun and the moon, the brightness of the aurora is rather weak.
Weak northern lights have a brightness comparable to that of the Milky Way, our galaxy, which can be seen as a diffuse band of light across the sky on clear winter nights.
The northern lights are then much stronger than starlight and 100 to 1000 times stronger than the weakest observable light.

USATODAY.com - Answers: The best places to see the northern lights   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
The Earth in its orbit is inside this equatorial band during January and July, and when it is at it maximum heliographic latitudes in September and March, the Earth is in the zone of maximum solar activity.
This means that outside of Alaska, the best places in the USA to see the northern lights are in the northernmost states along the Canadian border, and the odds decrease as you go south.
Since the strength of the solar activity that causes the northern lights determines how far south they are seen, strong activity could create the kind of large aurora seen as far south as Georgia or Arizona (this is very rare) early in the fall before people in North Dakota have seen a more ordinary aurora.

Comment: It is well known that by 1975 when this album was recorded, The Band was much less a band than they used to be, not due to loss of talent, but loss of the easygoing friendships that had fueled the first two albums.
"Northern Lights, Southern Cross" features the same dense, muscular arrangements as previous albums, anchored by Levon Helm's supple, versatile drumming, and the role of lead vocalist is still passed around between Helm, Danko, and Manuel.

By the mid-70s, The Band was losing the place they once had as a group widely considered "as important as the Beatles." They expressed this sense of loss on 1971's "Cahoots" but the album was unfortunately panned by most as a disappointment.
Also re-surfacing is The Band's trademark of brilliantly visiting historical nostalgia, evident on 'Acadian Driftwood,' but the song is mostly a history lesson and foreshadows the Native American themes that would dominate Robbie Robertson's solo albums.

Northern Lights starts with the sound that came first from the Kentucky hills, mixes in a bit of western swing, blues, folk, jazz, Cajun, even classical, and delivers proof that bluegrass is more than foot-stomping dance music.
One is always surprised by the variety of music the bluegrass band Northern Lights performs live and produces on each and every one of their CDs.
Of course, their new album New Moon (released in 2005) continues their tradition of being a completely non-traditional bluegrass band, so much so that they have been called "new grass." The album is also the first produced since bassist John Daniel joined the band and Ben Demerath replaced Taylor Armerding as lead singer.

Their albums were analyzed and reviewed as intensely as any records by their one-time employer and sometime mentor Bob Dylan.
Ronnie Hawkins, an Arkansas-born rock & roller who aspired to a real career, put together a backing band that year that included his fellow Arkansan Levon Helm (born May 26, 1942), who played drums (as well as credible guitar) and had led his own band, the Jungle Bush Beaters.
