Before the first English settlement in the 1600's, the Northern Neck was the land between the "River of Swans" to the north and the "Quick-Rising Water" to the South, two loosely translated Indian terms for the Potomac River and the Rappahannock River.
It is the only part that is still referred to as the Northern Neck and most of it is shown in the modern-day roadmap at the right.
Since the Northern Neck was defined as the land that lies between the Potomac and Rappahannock, but the Rappahannock does not flow west of the Blue Ridge Mountains, a southwestern boundary had to be defined.

Until 1862 land grants in the Northern Neck issued by the commonwealth of Virginia were recorded in volumes maintained separately from the regular Land Office grants.
This collection consists of recorded copies of grants issued for land in the Northern Neck from 1692 to 1862 when the territory encompassing the present state of West Virginia withdrew from the Commonwealth to enter the Union.
Following the recitation of the ownership of the Northern Neck are the name of the grantee, the description of the land, any reservations for the proprietor, and the date on which the grant was signed.
