The disputed southern portions of Northwestern Ontario were confirmed as belonging to Ontario by the decisions of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in 1884 and confirmed by the Canada (Ontario Boundary) Act, 1889 of the Parliament of the United Kingdom.

The Northern Ontario Heritage Party was a provincial political party in Ontario, Canada that was formed in 1977 to campaign for provincial status for Northern Ontario.
Deibel travelled Northern Ontario recruiting 600 members for the new province committee, and obtaining 6,000 signatures on a petition requesting that a vote be given to Northern Ontario on the question of forming a new province.
Northern Ontario is has significant metallic mineral resources: the region produces nearly half of the world’s nickel, and a substantial portion of the Canada’s gold, silver, copper, zinc, uranium, cobalt and platinum metals.

The districts in Northern Ontario are Rainy River, Kenora, Thunder Bay, Cochrane, Timiskaming, Algoma, Sudbury, Nipissing and Manitoulin.
Although Northern Ontario's larger cities have tried with mixed results to diversify their economies in recent years, most communities in the region are resource-based economies, whose economic health is very dependent on "boom and bust" resource cycles.
Northern Ontario is one of a few Canadian regions whose population declined between the censuses of 1996 and 2001.

Northern Ontario is larger than France and the United Kingdom combined, and it is 7.6 times larger than southern Ontario.
I think the government members have to be careful, because northerners understand how important a role government can play in their lives in northern Ontario because of where we are in geography and also because of what happens in the economy.
Northerners get the sense from the provincial government that when it comes to economic development they really are not in the game, and they're not used to that.

During the time that I was Minister of Northern Development and chair of this board, we retained 7,000 jobs in northern Ontario and created 2,500 new ones during the course of our mandate.
I cannot see why all three parties would not want to support this most important fund, a fund that we've seen used throughout northern Ontario for the past many years since it has been established and a fund that really is put to good use in northern Ontario to address the uniqueness.
But I'll tell you what the difference is in not being a northerner and living in the north: You don't really understand the depth of feeling that northerners have for a fund such as the heritage fund and where it comes from.

The Ontario Government responded to the offer, noting that “Northern Ontario… is strengthened by being an integral part of a very broadly based provincial economy.” The government’s responded addressed each of the demands, but accepted none of them.
