The league was founded in 1968, as the northern equivalent of the Southern League, being the highest level Non-League division below The Football League.
The division is at the same level as the Premier Divisions of the Southern League and the Isthmian League.
At the end of each season two clubs are promoted to the Conference North: the league champions, and the winners of a play-off competition held between the 2nd through 5th placed clubs.

If the League Cup is won by a team that has already qualified for Europe, the League Cup’s UEFA Cup spot also goes to the next highest placed team in the League (unlike the FA Cup spot, it is never transferred to the losing finalist).
In 1992 the First Division Clubs resigned from The Football League en masse and on 27th May 1992 the FA Premier League was formed as a limited company, which worked out of an office at the then Football Association’s headquarters, Lancaster Gate.

The decision as to whether or not a league should be admitted to, and if admitted, their position in the National League System shall be made by the LC and shall be final and binding.
A league that signifies its acceptance to be bound by these regulations must be in a position to promote and relegate clubs at the conclusion of each season.
However, in exceptional circumstances a league may seek approval from the LC to elect a club not currently in membership of a league within the National League System provided that there is: (a) a vacancy within its constitution (b) the club meets the entry criteria and (c) promotion and relegation issues have been satisfied.

The main change for the 2006/06 season was the increase in the number of level leagues from four to five - two each with 22 clubs feeding into the Southern League Premier Division and Isthmian League Premier Division, and one with 24 clubsfeeding into the Northern Premier League Premier Division.
The FA plans to implement the sixth level 8 division at some indefinate point in the future, possibly reducing the nuimber of clubs to 20 per division at the same time.
The other change that took place for the 2006/06 season was the abolition of the Isthmian 2nd Division, reducing the number of level 9 leagues fomr 15 to 14.

As of 2006-07, the league was intended to be split into the Northern Premier League First Division (North) and the Northern Premier League First Division (Midlands) [1].
This was to reflect a standardisation of the National League System, in which the Northern Premier League and the Isthmian League will have their first divisions split to reflect the situation in the Southern League.
However, although the Isthmian League split has gone ahead, the split of the Northern Premier League has been cancelled for the time being, and may instead be implemented for the 2007-08 season.
