Northern Rail leases a fleet comprised of diesel and electric multiple units and has not continued First and Arriva's practice of hiring locomotive-hauled trains.

The Strategic Rail Authority (SRA) and the five affected Passenger Transport Executives have signed a franchise agreement with Serco-NedRailways to operate the new Northern Rail franchise.

The Northern Rail franchise will combine the existing First North Western and Arriva Trains Northern franchises, incorporating inter-urban, commuter and rural services throughout the whole of the North of England, including in and around the Greater Manchester, South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire and Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Executive (PTE) areas.

Following the declared bankruptcy of the Penn Central Railroad in 1970 and the major destruction of the rail line in 1972 by Hurricane Agnes, the County of York purchased the rail corridor in 1990 through a special agreement the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and formed the York County Rail Trail Authority.

Army bomb disposal experts are now examining three suspect devices on railway lines at Dunloy in County Londonderry, Lurgan in County Armagh and Finaghy, in south Belfast.
