Town land was sold to finance the construction, including two barrels of New England rum and four gallons of West Indian rum to sustain (and recruit?) the volunteers for the church raising.
All town residents and visitors were expected, on penalty of a fine and without regard to their personal religious opinion or preference, to attend its services twice every Sunday, with a brief intermission for a modest meal at mid-day.
Presumably, the Town hoped that a battle-hardened veteran of the French and Indian War was just the man to enforce respect for the invidious distinctions to be found in the simple act of sitting in church.

 Vernon, Vermont, New England, USA
As the story (perhaps apocryphal) goes, the townspeople charged their town representative to ask the legislature for the Huntstown name, but the legislator's wife thought that name was too ordinary and told him to ask for Vernon instead.
Originally the area was included in the Massachusetts grant for Northfield, which was made in 1672, and some Vernon land titles actually derive from that grant.
The townspeople had decided that they wanted the name changed to Huntstown after Arad Hunt, one of the town's most prominent citizens: justice of the peace for many years, the town's first representative to the Legislature, and earlier a member of the Council of Safety.
