The Northland Region begins at a narrowing of the peninsula close to the town of Wellsford, New Zealand Wellsford, where the peninsula reaches a minimum width of just 15 kilometres.
At its northern end, the Aupouri Peninsula reaches a number of capes each of which is claimed by some people to be the North Island's northernmost point: Cape Maria van Diemen, Cape Reinga, North Cape, New Zealand North Cape, and the Surville Cliffs.
The largest settlement on the peninsula is Whangarei, on the Pacific Ocean Pacific coast on a natural harbour close to the peninsula's widest point.

They were on their way back home and had already travelled the Northland and were very good at giving us advice and information on where we were going.
Continuing on the road north we eventually passed Dargaville where their Maritime Museum has the masts of the Greenpeace ship Rainbow Warrior which was bombed sunk by the French in Aukland Harbour where it was planning to head out to protest the French A-Bomb tests in the Pacific.
Most of this east side of the Northland Peninsula has wonderful views of rocky coasts and small coves with pretty beaches.
