Topic: Northrop Alpha

  Northrop Corporation
The Alpha was a single-engine all-metal passenger and mail plane with an open cockpit behind its enclosed cabin and split flaps.
Northrop had resigned from Douglas on January 1, 1938, and left the business a bitter man, declaring that he was done with the aircraft industry.
Northrop finally had the financial resources and facilities to enable him to pursue his interest in research and development and more specifically, in the flying wing.

The first was the Avion Corporation in 1927, which was absorbed in 1929 by the United Aircraft and Transport Corporation as a subsidiary named "Northrop Aviation Corporation".
Northrop still wanted his own company, and so in 1939 established the "Northrop Corporation" that lasted until 1994.

The Alpha could fly from coast to coast in twenty-three hours, carrying such commodities as freshly cut gardenias, silk worms, medical serums, and auto parts.
The project was not completed, and the veteran Alpha passed through the hands of a succession of owners until purchased by Foster Hannaford, Jr., of Winnetka, Illinois, in May 1946.
Hannaford hoped to restore the Alpha to flying condition, but was unable to do so before he died in 1971.

 Air Force Magazine
In the course of a long and illustrious career, the legendary Jack Northrop created a series of outstanding aircraft that ranged from a tiny wooden biplane to gigantic flying wings which were, in some ways, 40 years ahead of their time.
Jack Northrop’s third revolution stemmed from his virtual obsession with creating a “perfect airplane,” a flying wing that would eliminate the weight and drag of a conventional fuselage and empennage.
Northrop later maintained, “As far as the structure is concerned, that which was developed into the Alpha was really the pioneer for every airplane in the sky today.” He always insisted that this structural innovation was his greatest contribution to aviation technology.

Northrop's relationship with the military continued throughout World War II with the development of the N-3PB patrol bomber.
Northrop then continued his work on a flying wing bomber, finding success in 1940 with the flight of a one-third-scale model of the N-1M, the first true flying wing.
Northrop has also been the recipient of several awards and honors, including the St. Louis Medal from ASME in 1947, a Presidential Certificate of Merit in 1974 and induction into both the International Aerospace Hall of Fame in 1972 and the National Aviation Hall of Fame in 1974.

 Northrop B-35
Jack Northrop joined Douglas Aircraft in 1923, and rose to the rank of chief engineer, but he later left Douglas to rejoin his old team at what was now known as Lockheed.
As early as 1923, Jack Northrop had been convinced that the flying wing, in which the aircraft carried all loads and controls within the wing and dispensed with fuselage and tail sections, was the next major step forward in aircraft design.
Northrop management indicated that they would be satisfied to fabricate only the XB-35s and the YB-35s, with Martin having the responsibility for building the production B-35s at its plant in Baltimore, Maryland.
