 GPN-2000-000201 - HL-10 on Lakebed with B-52 flyby
Northrop Corporation built the HL-10 and M2-F2, the first two of the fleet of "heavy" lifting bodies flown by NASA.
The contract for construction of the HL-10 and the M2-F2 was $1.8 million.
The HL-10 was one of five lifting body designs flown at NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center, Edwards, California, from July 1966 to November 1975 to study and validate the concept of safely maneuvering and landing a low lift-over-drag vehicle designed for reentry from space.

E! Online News - Art, Schmart: "Star Wars" Invades Museum
And so, just down the hall from such aviation landmarks as the Northrop M2-F3--NASA's first test of a wingless aircraft--now sit the production models of Rebel B-wing and Y-wing Fighters, an Imperial Speeder Bike and a Mon Calamari Transport ship.
So good are the spacecraft models that the Millennium Falcon, with its scarred, blasted exterior and awkward, lumbering shape, looks every bit the time-worn bucket of junk it's supposed to resemble, particularly next to the sleeker--and smaller--TIE Interceptors and Rebel Snowspeeders.
The exhibit is filled with more than 200 props, models, costumes and storyboard sketches from the three films, along with brilliant original "concept" paintings done by artist Ralph McQuarrie that Lucas used to sell his vision to purse-controlling studio executives.

Northrop M2-F3, registered N803NA, sits on static display at the May 16, 1973 Edwards AFB Open House next to the HL-10.
Its sixteen glide flights in its original M2-F2 configuration ran from July 12, 1966 to May 10, 1967.
The HL-10 survives on a pylon in front of the NASA Dryden Flight Research Center at Edwards AFB.

No-one could have been nicer or more kind to me. General Yeager signed a $20 bill for me and also presented me with a signed and personalised photograph of himself with the Northrop B-2.
The following day I revisited the museum and underneath the Bell X-1, I met up with former Bell Aircraft design worker Stanley C. Tracz.

Chapter 5, Tortoise Becomes Hare (1964-1969)
At Ames, a series of exploratory studies during the 1950s culminated in a design known as the M2, a modified half-cone (it was flat on the top) and a rounded nose to reduce heating.
Northrop became the prime contractor for the aluminum "Heavyweights" sponsored by NASA.
One aircraft company later estimated it would have cost at least $150,000 to build the M2, but the Edwards crew did it for less than $50,000.

 M2 F3
The M2 F3 has reached the maximum height of 21.790 meters during its 16th and last flight.
M2 F2 The M2 F3 was the M2 F2 rebuild with a third vertical stabilizer and augmented control surfaces.
The M2 should be intended as a direct precursor of the X 30 NASP (National Aerospace Plane) project, launched by NASA in the early 80’s and later abandoned.

Nothing came of this proposal, but subsequent rocket powered variants such as the M2-F2, M2-F3, Northrop’s HL-10, Martin’s X-24A & X-24B were successful and were powered by the same Reaction Motors XLR-11 motor as the X-1.
The M2-F1 is on display at the Dryden Flight Research Center at Edwards AFB, California.
Yeager was now a fan of the lifting body concept and told Bikle that the lifting body handled well and that he would like to have a few jet-powered versions (which at that time had not been built) to use at the ARPS for training future lifting body pilots.

NASA pilots said the M2-F2 had lateral control problems, so when the M2-F2 was rebuilt at Northrop and redesignated the M2-F3, it was modified with an additional third vertical fin -- centered between the tip fins -- to improve control characteristics.
When the M2-F2 crashed on May 10, 1967, valuable information had already been obtained and was contributing to new designs.

Recalling his involvement in planning another weapon system, Stafford said he used hotel stationery in 1979 to write up the range, payload and gross weight requirements for a new bomber that would become the Northrop Grumman B-2.
Stafford said he's especially proud of the F-117 because it hit 39% of all strategic targets in the Persian Gulf War, while flying just 1.9% of Desert Storm missions.
Manke was a NASA research pilot for 11 years, flying 50 different aircraft including the pedalpowered Gossamer Albatross.

For the M2 Browning HMG it would be advisable to acquire the Quick Change Barrel (QCB) version to prevent the need for readjus tments after changing the barrels out or assembly.
From an experience base and tac tical efficiency base it would be wise to replace these weapons with the same or upgraded models rather than different systems.

 M2 F2
The M2 F2 ended his career with an accident (not deadly) and after that it was rebuild as M2 F3.
M2 F2 The M2 F2 belongs to the wide family of so called “lifting bodies” wingless aircrafts able to generate lift through and appropriate design of their fuselage.
The M2 F configuration was the worst among all the designs took in account by NASA.

I flew that in 1969, then in 1970 flew the first flight of the M2-F3, which was one of the Northrop designs.
I had shown a lot of interest in the plywood M2-F1 and when the heavier weight M2-F2 came up Milt Thompson was project pilot on it and Bruce Peterson was the alternate project pilot.
For some reason I was offered the chance to be an alternate project pilot, too, and I remember reading droves of material on the M2 which had some very odd-looking curves, a lot of side force with side slip and a lot of roll with side slip.
