Northrop YA-9   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
The Northrop YA-9 was a prototype attack aircraft developed for the USAF, but passed over in preference for the Fairchild YA-10 that became the A-10 Thunderbolt II in service.
It is alleged that the YA-9 more strongly impressed the Soviets than the US Air Force, and the Sukhoi Su-25 was largely based on spy footage of this aircraft.
A fly-off of the two prototypes took place October 10 and December 9 1973, with the YA-10 declared the winner on January 18 1973.

Northrop's first job in aviation was in working for Loughead Aircraft Manufacturing Company (laterLockheed Corporation) in 1916.
In 1928, Northrop struck out on his own, founding the Avion Corporation, which Northrop was forced to cell to United Aircraft and Transport Corporation in 1930.
While working at this company, Northrop focused on the flying wing design, which he was convinced was the next major step in aircraft design.

 Northrop YA-13
The Northrop YA-13 attack plane of the mid-1930s has a very convoluted and complex origin.
Since the performance of the Gamma 2A and 2B substantially exceeded that of the Curtiss A-12 Shrike, Northrop decided in early 1933 to undertake at its own expense the development of an attack version of the Gamma, the Gamma 2C.
While at Northrop, a number of internal modifications were made to the Gamma 2C.

Testing of the Gamma 2C was generally satisfactory, but a few problems were identified, particularly in the stability and control area.
The aircraft was returned to Northrop for changes based on the Air Corps suggestions.

 Northrop A-17
The Northrop A-17 series of single-engined attack bombers were the backbone of the USAAC's attack aircraft strength during the late 1930s.
Since the semi-retractable undercarriage Had resulted in only a slight improvement in performance, it was replaced by a fixed undercarriage, with struts and open-sided wheel fairings.
This was the largest prewar Army attack contract, and was a bonanza for the new Northrop branch.

The aircraft was apparently developed from a Northrop technology demonstrator known as THAP (Tactical High Altitude Penetrator), which first flew in 1981 and was similar in design, but slightly smaller.
Northrop took it over in May 1994, and is now known as Northrop Grumman.

In the early 1930s, the Northrop Corporation produced the Gamma 2C, a company-financed prototype for a two-seat attack aircraft.
In order to improve the performance and the pilot's forward visibility, the YA-13 aircraft was returned to Northrop in January of 1935 to be re-engined with the smaller diameter but more powerful 950 hp Pratt & Whitney R-1830-7 Twin Wasp fourteen-cylinder air-cooled radial.
The Gamma 2F, another private venture project of Northrop, already featured a smaller engine and this version was ordered into production as the A-17, so no further work was carried out on the XA-16.

Northrop designed its A-9 with much attention to cost reduction, as the Secretary of the Air Force had announced that he would not buy the aircraft if it cost more than US$ 1.4 million apiece.
The A-9 had a high wing but stood low on the ground, low enough to ensure that all maintenance could done without ladders or platforms; the landing gear legs of the A-10 are sufficiently high to allow a not too tall person to walk under the wing.

Missing E-MailGate: Northrop Grumman Lawyer Earl Silbert is Peter Knight's and James Riady's Lawyer [Free Republic]
As discussed above in Section III.A.4.g, Earl Silbert was apparently hired by Northrop Grumman as outside counsel after some of the employees met with company representatives about their discovery of the problem and the fact that they had been threatened.
Inasmuch as his clients were targeted or implicated in various criminal and Congressional investigations, Northrop Grumman’s reconstruction of potentially inculpatory e-mails would be contrary to the interests of Silbert’s Administration clients.
Since the White House Counsel's Office has nothing to do with negotiating Northrop Grumman Contracts for the White House Computer Systems, the only reason for Silbert to call the WH Counsel's Office is to discuss the threats made to NG's Computer Techs with regard to hiding the Missing E-Mail problem from investigators.
