This county borders on the Susquehanna River for 22 miles above, and for 21 miles below Northumberland, where the North Branch comes in from the East.
The space inclosed by this semi-circle is occupied by No. V coming over from Union county on the backs of four of the Buffalo mountain anticlinals.
On all the outcrops of limestone VI numerous quarries are wrought, and this is the only mineral of value in the county outside of the coal field, for the lead and zinc found in this limestone amounts to nothing practical.

Sheriff Middleton and Deputy Lewis have recruited a small but dedicated group of volunteers (Friends of Northumberland County Animal Shelter)as a support system to increase adoptions from the shelter, provide an educational resource for the community and generally help out wherever they are needed.
This group, working closely with the county, is dedicated to raising funds for long range plans to increase the size of the shelter, including a facility to house cats, and to provide an immediate subsidy to the annual county budget to supply the animals in the shelter with additional creature comforts.
Other than for residents of Northumberland, Westmoreland, Richmond or Lancaster Counties, any animal adopted from this facility must be spayed or neutered before the new adopter takes possession of the animal.
