Northumberland Ferries Limited (NFL) is a ferry company operating in eastern Canada and headquartered in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.
NFL has operated the ferry service that carries the Trans-Canada Highway across the eastern part of the Northumberland Strait between Wood Islands, Prince Edward Island and Caribou, Nova Scotia since it was established in 1941 by the Government of Canada.
NFL also operates the ferry terminals in Wood Islands and Caribou, which are owned by the Government of Canada.

The Northumberland Strait (French: détroit de Northumberland) is a strait in the southern part of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence in eastern North America.
A ferry service crosses the 23-kilometre (12–nautical mile) wide eastern part of the strait between Wood Islands, Prince Edward Island and Caribou, Nova Scotia.
The strait hosts two seasonal ferry services: Northumberland Ferries Limited operates a passenger/vehicle service between Caribou, Nova Scotia and Wood Islands, Prince Edward Island, a separate passenger-only ferry service also operates from Caribou to Pictou Island.

Marine Atlantic was established in 1986 to take over the provision of ferry services in Atlantic Canada which had previously been operated by CN Marine, a subsidiary of Canadian National Railway.
The MV Caribou and the MV Joseph and Clara Smallwood are the largest icebreaking passenger ferries in the world, and the largest ferry vessels operating in North America.
Marine Atlantic also removed itself from the provision of coastal ferry services in Newfoundland and Labrador with the transfer of operations to the provincial government at the end of the 1997 season, in exchange for federal funding to extend regional roads (such as the Trans-Labrador Highway) to service coastal communities.

The S.S. Sankaty, was also purchased by Northumberland Ferries in 1941 but before the company could get her into service she was requisitioned by the Canadian government and served during World War II as a minelayer, joining the Prince Nova on the run in 1946 as the S.S. Charles A. Dunning.
Note: Before the ferries ran to and from the Island, mail and passengers were carried by Ice Boats in the winter months, continuing well into the 20th century, until the arrival of reliable ice breaking with the introduction of the S.S. Prince Edward Island in 1917.
