Academics at Northumbria University have voted to go on strike indefinitely, in a serious escalation of the higher education pay dispute.
Already students in some universities have been unable to take some exams because, as well as the marking boycott, members of the other main academic union, the AUT, are refusing to set exams.
Aberystwyth University, which has been hit hard because it is thought to have more members of the AUT, announced on Friday that it was cancelling 23 exams next week.

A university vice chancellor's plan to withhold 100% of the pay of lecturers taking limited, non-strike, action has provoked a vote for all-out, continuous strike action at the University of Northumbria.
At a packed mass meeting today (Friday 12), members of the lecturers' union, NATFHE, at Northumbria University unanimously voted to take continuous and indefinite strike action in response to the threat by the university's VC to withhold 100% of wages.
These union busting tactics will be resisted, employers just cannot be allowed to refuse to pay all academic staff when they are carrying out 95% of their duties.
