When the BSA group collapsed under its debts, government help led to a merger with the Norton-Villiers combine, only the Triumph name was to be retained in the new group name of Norton-Villiers-Triumph, NVT.
The new bike was named the Thunderbird (a name Triumph would later license to Ford for use on a car), and only one year after it was introduced a hot rodder in Southern California mated the 650 Thunderbird with a twin carb head originally intended for GP racing and named the new creation the Wonderbird.
Triumph and BSA were aware of Honda's ability to make quality motorcycles but while they were only making smaller engined models the large engine market was safe.

Triumph motorcycle production peaked in 1969 at around 46,800 units per year, however by the early 70s the slow supply of components, coupled with tooling problems led to production delays and in 1972, in a Government sponsored move the BSA Group merged with Norton Villiers and Norton-Villiers-Triumph (NVT) was formed.
Motorcycling was at the height of its popularity in Western Europe and the USA, with some of the world’s screen legends being spotted regularly on their Triumph motorcycle.
Triumph Factory 2, together with the buildings housing the design, development, spares, clothing, accessories and bike storage functions were unaffected by the fire and continued to operate as normal.

Norton had been consumed into the Norton Villiers Triumph group but the whole thing went into liquidation and by 1978 the last commandos were built.
Norton didn’t loose it’s name and developed (on a super small budget) a few bikes for the police forces and a civilian bike called the 588 cc Classic and a touring Commander.
Norton upheld it’s name of developing good controlling bikes (create frame work) and even with the heavier engine Commando 850 cc the vibration wasn’t too bad (frame + rubber mounting system).

Because of this, the three cylinder Trident is sometimes known as the "Tiger 100 and a half." The Tiger 100's basic design was one of the most long-lived in motorcycling history, being used for the next 50 years in Triumph's entire range of vertical twins (and triples) including the famous Bonneville.
Bernard Hooper, who had been with Villiers from 1958 to 1965, was designated the project's chief designer.
The team's attempts to continue development on the engine and cylinder head were undercut by the knowledge that Wally Wyatt, the seasoned Plumstead, (Norton) based development engineer, had already modified the Atlas engine to produce more power than the P10 looked capable of.
