I'm reading the Python biography at the moment (the one written by the Pythons) and John Cleese says that Michael Palin was telling him one day about a car that he took to his local garage.
So John went off after hearing Michael's story and wrote a sketch for their TV show (How To Irritate People) with Graham Chapman (you'll find that Cleese and Chapman mostly wrote together, while Michael Palin wrote with Terry Jones and Eric Idle usually wrote on his own), about a guy returning a second hand car.
