The Royal Norwegian Ministry of Defence (Forsvarsdepartementet) is a Norwegian government ministry in charge of the formation and implementation of national security and defence policy, and for the overall management and control of the activities of subordinate agencies.
The ministry is headed by the politically appointed Minister of Defence, currently Anne-Grete Strøm-Erichsen.

The submarine KN Utstein hit the tanker Kilstraum, which is also Norwegian, 18 miles off the island of Lewis at about 0350 BST on Thursday morning.
The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) said the submarine, which was submerged at the time, sustained rudder damage and was in Stornoway undergoing inspection.
