The Norwegians colonized Iceland, the Faroe Islands, Greenland and parts of the British Islands and attempted to settle at L'Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland, Canada (perhaps the Vinland of The Saga of Eric the Red).
The Norwegian royal line died out in 1387, partly because of the grand recession after the fl plague in 1349, wiping out the majority of the population, and partly because Queen Margrethe's son, heir to the throne, died at barely 17 years of age.
Norway is bounded for its entire length by seas of the North Atlantic Ocean: the North Sea to the southwest and its large inlet the Skagerrak to the south, the Norwegian Sea to the west, and the Barents Sea to the northeast.

As the Norwegian state since the 1970s has become quite rich, the system has benefited the church and the religious believers, and as a result the resistance against the state church system has generally been quite weak from the part of the religious believers.
In the case of bishops the church is allowed to present its candidates, and from the list of candidates presented by the church, the state selects the new bishop.
The members of the church council are elected through a process in which the congregations elect members of the councils of bishoprics, and these again elect the members of the national church council.

It appears that the first Norwegian settlers in Webster came from the large Norwegian settlement in Goodhue County near Kenyon, MN and from the Norwegian settlement of Christiania just a few miles to the north and east of here in Dakota and Scott Counties.
One of the earliest Norwegian settlers in Webster from the Christiania settlement was Ludvig Dokkenbraaten.
It is stated that he and his family felt more at home in this church and that they held prayer meetings in the home as part of the life of the congregation.

Gay marriage also elevated the church’s openly rebellious minority liberal faction to national visibility, allowing Norwegians to feel that their proclivity for unmarried parenthood, if not fully approved by the church, was at least not strongly condemned.

But my reasons have to do with granting to churches, as institutions, religious bodies, the right to define marriage, and as part of that, recognizing the authority of churches to define marriage for their congregants.
I don't like it because it recognizes churches as having the right to perform ceremonies which entitle people to specific state and federal benefits, which seems to me to be an unacceptable mingling of church and state.
It's true that churches now perform marriages and can decide whether they want to or not, but if churches decide they don't want to, people who want to participate in the "sacred institution" can *be* married and do not have to be relegated to something they wouldn't choose, i.e., civil unions.
