		On the other hand, many composers of all eras have specialized in choral music, and for the first thousand years of western music history choral music was one of the only types of music to have survived intact.
		One of the first innovative choral composers of the Baroque was Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643), a master of counterpoint, who extended the new techniques pioneered by the Venetian School and the Florentine Camerata.
		Verse anthems alternated accompanied solos with choral sections; the best-known composers of this genre were Orlando Gibbons and Henry Purcell.

		A student of Ravel, his music is unmistakably French, with echoes of Ravel, Debussy, Schmitt and even jazz; occasional suggestions of the kind of added-note harmony that later would come to be associated with Messiaen, or even early Sorabji are also present.
		But there is a sinuous, mellifluous quality to his vocal lines which suggests a transcription of the vocal techniques associated with the performance of Indian ragas, and a genuine feeling of two disparate cultures harmoniously combined, rather than being uneasily grafted on to each other.
