Articles - Railway signal   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-20)
Most railway signals worldwide use a multi-unit signal head with a separate lamp and lens system for each aspect colour, although there are still many "searchlight" type signals in use in the U.S. Reflectors are not used because of the risk of stray sunlight giving the appearance of illumination and thus causing a phantom aspect.
This type of signal does use a (parabolic) reflector and thus lower power lamps and a less directional lens system are used since there is a far greater percentage of the light available to be directed down the tracks towards the driver of the oncoming train.
Electrically operated railway signals in the UK The railway signalling system used across the majority of the UK railway network uses colour lights to tell the driver the status of the section of track ahead.

Railway - About Railway - KnowledgeIsFun.com   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-20)
In the late 18th century, iron rails began to be employed: British civil engineer William Jessop designed edge rails to be used with flanged wheels for use on a scheme in Loughborough, Leicestershire (in 1789 and subsequently opened an iron-works to produce more rails).
The first successful steam operated railway was the Stockton and Darlington Railway in northern England in the 1820s.
In Britain the term railway is often used to refer to the complete organisation of tracks, trains, stations, signaling, timetables and the organising companies which collectively make up a coordinated railway system, while permanent way or p/way refers to the tracks alone.

The country's state-owned railway operator, NSB, has made huge investments in new rolling stock and upgrading the system's infrastructure, as the country aims to ensure that rail plays a growing role in meeting the country's transport needs for the next century.
The Government decided that the best way to advance the cause of rail travel in the country would be to reorganise passenger operations under three divisions, one each for short-, medium- and long-distance travel.
Norway's national rail infrastructure authority, Jernbaneverket, is investing Norway Kroner 1.6 billion to upgrade the three principal long-distance corridors, after funding approval for the Norwegian Railway Plan covering 1998-2007 was given by the country's parliament.

A further convincing aspect that had tipped the scales in favour of Funkwerk was said to be the competence of the company to install equipment quickly and on schedule, proven already in various projects.
