Navigators General Manager Keith Hallal said he is not concerned by the drop in attendance, blaming the weather more than the affiliation switch for the slow start.
Yesterday was the ninth game the Navigators have had to cancel this season, and Saturday the crowd was announced at 2,357 but by the end of a dismal, rainy doubleheader less than 100 people remained in the stands.
Norwich, however, is not alone in its struggle with the weather.

Tufts graduate and Norwich Navigators head honcho Louis DiBella is in the midst of revamping his newly-purchased minor league baseball team in a major way.

Bringing longtime boxing buddy King to Connecticut’s Dodd Stadium, home of the minor league Norwich Navigators, was just one piece of DiBella’s plan to generate a buzz about his struggling minor league team that would help bring fans back to the ballpark.

Today the Norwich Navigators announced plans to stay in Norwich through 2009, ending speculation that Connecticut was about to lose its second Eastern League team in as many years (the New Haven Ravens left Yale Field last year for Manchester, New Hampshire, where they are faring ever so slightly better in terms of attendance).
Attendance has been falling since the newness of the team wore off (168,559 last year, down from 281,473 in 1995) and the stadium is out in the middle of a big patch of nothing that bills itself as an industrial park.
But Norwich counts itself lucky that the Navs are staying at all.
