A Michigan court of appeals has upheld the conviction of a Benton Township man accused of murdering his 3-year-old granddaughter.
Norwood also said he had problems with her listening to him when he was trying to teach her how to put on her slippers.
The appeals court rejected Norwood's claim that his state of mind at the time of the beating should have lead to a manslaughter conviction instead of murder.

   Norwood, 41, was accused of beating the 3 1/2-year-old with a large leather belt because she didn't put her slippers on correctly.
   The girl and her four siblings were in Norwood's custody as foster children.

Ricky Norwood, of Berrien County's Benton Township, was sentenced to between 18 years and 54 years in prison after being convicted of second-degree murder for beating Scertia Johnson with a belt in October 1999.
The correct range of Norwood's minimum sentence is 71/2 years to 12 1/2 years, not 13 1/2 years to 22 1/2 years, the appeals court said.
The Berrien County office of the Michigan Family Independence Agency placed Scertia with Norwood and his wife although Norwood had four misdemeanor convictions on his record.
